Thanks a lot Kirrin for all those beautiful Amjad Ali Khan's LPs!
ReplyDeleteGreat first LP by Amjad Ali Khan!
ReplyDeleteAny idea who the Tabla player is?
Many thanks Kirrin :)
Hi Gidi,
DeleteI have no idea who the tabla player is. I might check the LP labels - it could be there.. but a real shame they don't even get acknowledged on the covers. Tabla players also go through rigorous training and are the second half of a whole in my opinion. I guess this performance was more of a standard transaction type of thing, as they are sometimes with the soloist maintaining all the praise and spotlight (no offence to Amjad - love your work...) Whereas Ravi Shankar and Allarakha for example like so many other duos clearly had a strong bond and mutual respect / acknowledgement in most performances. That's my morning rant! K.
Still not an uncommon practice I'm afraid, especially in music festivals in India...
DeleteAnd it's funny because it goes to the opposite extreme as well - I remember going to a Shivkumar Sharma concert in Jerusalem in 1998, but everyone was there to see Zakir Hussein who accompanied on tabla and had no idea who Shivkumar Sharma was...
What I would give to see some of these artists... It's probably too late now and I was too young. I'm glad you got to see some of these legends in real. I have quite a few Shivkumar Sharma LP's, including a rare 1982 with Zakir Hussain called "... When Time Stood Still!" which I will post in the future.
DeleteWell done Kirrin, another superb post, thanks again.
ReplyDeleteDear Kirrin
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this rare LP. The only reissue by Saregama I can find is a digital MP3 from their website, though its not labelled Raga Kiran Ranjani, which made it hard to find. I suppose this is the source you mention?
Raga Kiran Ranjani is a very rare raga, it definitely not another name for Kirwani and this recording is the only one I have for a raga of that name. Perhaps its his gharana's name for a raga which has another more common name?
Hi Louis. I think this was the source. It says on the back cover this raga was created by Amjad Ali Khan, so he might be the only one who has performed it, unless he taught it to his sons?
DeleteThank you !
