Ali Akbar Khan 1967 'Pre-Dawn To Sunrise Ragas'

[Re-post and Re-transfer with WAVs]

Here is another great recording of the Sarod Master Ali Akbar Khan. This LP was released in the USA in 1967. Connoisseur Society released many Ali Akbar Khan LPs throughout the 60s and 70s and all of them are wonderful. Fortunately several of Connoisseur Society's recordings were remastered in the 90s and re-released on CD as the 'Signature Series Vol 1-5'. This LP album was not however on these volumes. This LP in my collection is the Japanese pressing on the Philips label. I try to by Japanese pressings whenever I can because of the reputation for high quality.

Label: Connoisseur Society - CS 1967 (this version: Philips - SFX-7676)

Tracks:
A - Raga Bairagi 20:32
B - Raga Aheer Bhairow 21:13

Digitised with: Project Essential II Turntable, Ortofon Red Stylus, recorded as WAV 16/48 in Audacity and saved unaltered (apart from track separation/info tags) as WAV 16/48, and then separately edited with: Clickrepair (low settings) then slight reduction on surface noise + normalised to -1.5db in Audacity and exported as WAV 16/48 and MP3 320kbps.

  4. Dear Kirrin
Fantastic blog and its great to get these recordings in digital format. Is there any chance you could also post the original unaltered WAV files as well as the processed MP3 files. In my experience, there is more musical quality in the original direct digitisations (even taking the odd pop into account) then when sampled down to MP3.
    Mnay thanks Louis

    1. Hi Yotte. I will eventually post the WAVs. I did the transfers a while ago so I will have to go through my hard drives and find them, and for the ones I can't find will have to re-transfer. Since I started providing WAVs on the blog, I have also organised my files a lot better, so shouldn't have this problem in the future! Thanks for your ongoing support and listening. Appreciate you comments any time.

  6. Kirrin, I have an earlier transfer of this album by you (at 16/44.1).

Is this a new transfer (@16/48)? Should I (we) replace the earlier versions?

    1. Hi Bill. Sorry about the multiple versions. Yes this is a new transfer at 16/48 and you can replace the previous version. The cleaned versions on all the [re-posts/re-transfers] are also all a bit better. I'm standardizing everything, so all the posts before Nikhil Banerjee (February) will eventually be re-transferred in 16/48 with much smoother click repair on the cleaned versions. I always put the transfer info under the download links. By the way I was listening to this LP on the way to work this morning.. what a top notch recording by connoisseur society, they really released some wonderful stuff. I know I said it in the post but it's really baffling why some of these recordings (including this one) weren't re-released on CD.

    2. Pleased don't apologize. You are the one doing all the hard work. Replacing files on the user end is easy.

Listening to the new transfer now.

      Thanks for all your efforts!
