Ali Akbar Khan 1973 'Ahir Bhairav & Durgeshwari'

[Re-post and Re-transfer with FLACs]

If you haven't guessed by now, I'm a huge Ali Akbar Khan fan... and for good reason! I don't understand why so many of his recordings weren't remastered and re-released on CD. This LP was released in India in 1972. A beautiful and peaceful rendering of Ahir Bhairav - a raga which I first fell in love with from hearing the song 'Albela sajan' from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and also rendered nicely by Rashid Khan... and many others... Anyway!

Label: His Master's Voice ‎– EASD 1391

Tracks:
A - Raga Ahir Bhairav (Alap & Gat Madhyalaya - Teental)
B - Raga Durgeshwari (Gat - Vilambit & Drut - Teental)

Digitised with: Project Essential II Turntable, Ortofon Red Stylus, recorded as WAV 16/48 in Audacity and saved unaltered (apart from track separation/info tags) as FLAC, and then separately edited with: Clickrepair (low settings) then slight reduction on surface noise + normalised to -1.5db in Audacity and exported as FLAC and MP3 320kbps.

  1. Dear Kirrin
Thanks for this blog. The CD version of this was released by Saregama a few years ago as "Mesmerising Maestros" CDNF 150881. I can't recall the quality of the CD remastering for this music, but I agree with you (and others) that it often left a lot to be desired. In any case, with the demise of CD's in India, this is probably as unobtainable now as the original LP.
    All the best Louis

  2. Thanks for the message. I agree a lot of these CDs are now obscure and variable in quality. Luckily this was a good pressing and the recording equipment has captured a nice range so that we can hear a pretty clean result. Without a good recording you'll never ever get a good end result whether vinyl or CD!

  4. Kirrin, I have the earlier 16/44.1 version you put up. Do you suggest replacing that earlier version with this one?

    1. Hi Bill.

The only real difference on this transfer is the use of click repair. I have been thoroughly pleased with the results, so using it on all my edited (cleaned) versions now.
