Ali Akbar Khan 1966 'Raga Durga, Dhun in Khamaj'

[Re-post and Re-transfer with WAVs]

This vinyl was released in India in 1966 in Stereo. It was also pressed in the UK under the 'Music of India Series no. 5. The version I have is the UK pressing that I acquired this year. I like the original LP cover, which is fully white and has the same picture of Ali Akbar - but I prefer purchasing original US/UK pressings over Indian pressings if available, as I find they are usually a better quality. The Music of India Series itself is interesting and features several popular names such as Ravi Shankar / Bismillah Khan and Vilayat Khan. I have heard a digital version of this LP from Saregama, but it was pretty bad... no surprise. Both these ragas have a major sounding (happy) tonality. Enjoy!

Label: His Master's Voice ‎- EASD 1310 (India) / ASD 2367 (UK) & Odeon - SMOAE 141

Tracks:
A - Raga Durga
B - Dhun In Khamaj

Digitised with: Project Essential II Turntable, Ortofon Red Stylus, recorded as WAV 16/48 in Audacity and saved unaltered (apart from track separation/info tags) as WAV 16/48, and then separately edited with: Clickrepair (low settings) then slight reduction on surface noise + normalised to -1.5db in Audacity and exported as WAV 16/48 and MP3 320kbps.

    1. Hi Prasad,

I don' see a problem? Is there an error message? When I click the link, the download link has now moved to the top right hand corner of the dropbox page.

  3. Got it! Thanks Kirrin! You cleared the confusion. I think https://www.dropbox.com made few changes and I missed seeing the Download icon which is now in the right hand corner. Well! You are doing a great job. Rips are very good.

I am surprised that a lot of Americans like and share the ancient Indian classical music. I earned PhD from the US. It is really nice to have a lot of direct VINYL rips. Most of the CDs are easily available here. However, there is NO charm as Vinyl is indeed Vinyl. Thanks again.

    Regards,

    Prasad

    1. The world owes a lot to the US for its patronage of Indian Classical music and for the great work being done there now and in the past to professionally record and archive the music, as well as host many performances. Despite the large 'phase' in the 60s and 70s mostly linked to hippie culture (completely disconnected with the real ideals and meaning of the artform), it assisted spreading the names of the great masters and it created a lot of genuine devotees - so a lot of good has followed. A lot of my favorite LPs were recorded in USA including on the World Pacific & Connoisseur Society labels...

  5. Absolute delight - listening to these two musical feasts.
Just one thing - the cover says Tabla by Mahapurush Misra - and the vinyls say Tabla by Shankar Ghosh - which one is corect?
